STOCK SALE
WEAK DEMAND FOR EWES
SHARP ADVANCE IN STORE
PIGS
The main feature about the fortnightly stock sale at Leeston to-day was a sharp advance in store pig values by comparison with those ruling at the previous sale, and equivalent to about 3/- a head above the rates obtained at Addington market on Wednesday. The entry of sheep was the largest for some time, and consisted mainly of ewes for which there was a restricted demand at the lower price levels ruling of late. The type of sound-mouth ewes which brought 15/- to 16/- a year ago were worth only about a third of that figure today.
Representative sheep sales were:— 78 two, four, six, and eight-tooth three-quarterbred ewes in fair condition, 15/-; 53 four-year-old threequarterbred ewes 11/3; 50 four and five-year-old half-bred ewes, 8/3; 75 sound-mouth 4-year-old ewes, 11/11; 79 sound-mouth ewes, 7/6; Southdown rams lgn. to 3Sgns.
Of the 80 pigs penned practically all were stores. The demand was brisk and a good clearance was made at the higher rates. Large stores made up to 47/6, medium 20/- to 35/-, small 18/- to 20/-, good weaners 16/- to 21/-, small weaners 9/6 to 14/-.
