STACK FIRE
OATSHEAVES DESTROYED
BLAZE AT SOUTHBRIDGE
An outbreak of fire, the cause of which he is unable to account for, resulted in the loss to Mr James Ballagh, "Crossgates," Southbridge, of a stack of oatsheaves last Thursday night. There is a strong suspicion of incendiarism, for neither Mr Ballagh nor any of'his men had been near the stack during the day.
There was no sign of fire when Mr R. Hampton, threshing mill proprietor, passed along a nearby road at 9 o'clock, yet the fire had a good hold when it was noticed at 10 o'clock by Messrs L. Searle and J. D. Cameron, neighbouring farmers.
There were two stacks fairly close together, but fortunately the breeze was in the south-west and this made it possible to save the second stack, though it was blackened a little on one side as though an attempt to set it ablaze had failed. Mr Ballagh was obliged to remain on guard throughout the night in case the fire should catch the second stack.
