RYDER CUP TEAM

BRITISH GOLF TOURISTS

WIVES TO BE LEFT BEHIND

(From The Guardian's London

Correspondent)

LONDON, February 4.

No wives will be allowed to accompany the Ryder Cup team which will visit America this year, but do the women mind?

British wives never have accompanied their husbands in previous Ryder Cup trips, but some of the members of the American Ryder Cup team which visited England in 1937 brought their wives with them and the results were not ideal. In fact, Walter Hagen, the captain, said that on these occasions women were a menace and upset everything. Here are the views of wives of some famous golfers, expressed this week:

Mrs Abe Mitchell: A man does not take his wife to business with him, and our husbands' golf is their busienss. Much as I should like to visit America, there are times when a man's wife ought to stay at home, and this is one of them.

Mrs Reginald Whitcombe (wife of the open champion, and herself a good and keen golfer): The only reason I should like to go would toe to watch the actual match being played. I don't want to accompany my husband on the whole trip, but Reg likes to have me around.

Mrs A. H. Padgham: These trips are hard work, and a wife should think of her man first. And my baby must be considered also. Some of these tours are too long.
