SWIMMING CARNIVAL

LARGE ATTENDANCE SEES FINE DISPLAY

It was the turn of the swimmers in the evening to demonstrate their fitness and the attractiveness of the sport as a recreation; more than that, as a necessary attainment for every able-bodied person. The Leeston Swimming Club held a cafnival in the school bath, in which assistance was given by a strong contingent from Christchurch, East Christchurch, and Fendalton Clubs being mainly represented. There was a large gallery of spectators present, estimated at about 260 and they were given a fine display of swimming. The evening was fine, although an easterly breeze reduced the air temperature. Officials who had charge of the district races were Messrs I. Smith (president), T. Beckett (secretary), W. H. Cartwright, and D. J. Ridden (judges), |R. E. Burgess (timekeeper and starter), H. D. Jones (announcer). Mr H. T. Schou controlled the races for the city swimmers. In addition a demonstration was given by A. Cameron, of learn-to-swim methods and the crawl being taught; J. Taylor demonstrated the breaststroke, and W. J. K. Hart the backstroke. There was also a demonstration of diving by G. Berry, while the methods I adopted in life-saving were shown by A. Cocks and J. Taylor. At tile conclusion of the carnival, Mr Cartwright, on behalf of the Leeston Club, thanked Mr Schou and the visitors from Christchurch for the help they had given.
