TUG-OF-WAR

Seven teams lined up for the tug- ]- of-war, the scene of this contest being on the grass in front of the square garden opposite the Memorial. Battens had been laid down for the contestants and ample lighting was provided. Unfortunately no provision had been made for keeping the spectators back and in their excitement the front ranks crowded close to the competitors, blocking the view of J those behind, despite the requests of I the officials to stand back. The teams j proved to be evenly matched, decisions being gained with very little margin and great excitement was generated in some of the pulls. The competition was under the control of Messrs Gilbert Bray, F. Alexander, W. H. Cartwright, and the two secretaries. In the first round the Minorcas beat Southbridge B; Southbridge A beat Power Board, Ellesmere County workers beat Oddfellows, and Spring- j ston County workers pulled a bye with Power Board. The semi-finals saw Minorcas beaten by Southbridge A, Ellesmere beat Springs County workers. The final between Southbridge A and the county men saw a stubbornly-fought contest, in doubt to the last second, and in the midst of much excitement the county workers were declared the winners. The teams taking part in the final were:—County: McMahch, Wright, Young, D. Robb, Holmes. Southbridge: Hubbard, W. T. Nidd, D. Lochhead, Condon, and Sheehan. There was also a challenge match between some of the younger men who had grouped themselves into two teams—Lightweights and

Featherweights. A good contest resulted, victory going to the Lightweights by three inches.
