Springs-Ellesmere Demonstrations

Physical, Moral, and Spiritual Fitness

Successful Week-end Fixtures at Leeston

An epitome of sporting and athletic recreations indulged in by New Zealanders and of those available in the Springs and Ellesmere counties, was provided for the public of the two districts during the Fitness Week demonstration held at Leeston over the week-end. While the picture was not by any means a complete one, there being necessarily gaps caused by unavoidable absence of several of the major forms of sport for which representation was not possible, still the review which was given over the two days included quite a wide range. A start was made on Friday evening with a relay race and a tug-of-war. Then on Saturday afternoon there was demonstrated at the showgrounds many different types of sport and physical recreation; in the evening a swimming carnival was held. Very little time had been allowed for organising work, but the way in which the demonstration was staged was a tribute to the enthusiastic work of the controlling committee, of which Mr A. Anderson was chairman, and more especially to the enthusiasm, hard work, and organising ability of the two secretaries, Messrs T. Moorhouse and J. A. Scott. On Friday evening and again on Saturday afternoon many willing assistants gave their services, effectively co-operating with the secretaries and all playing their part in making the demonstration the undoubted success it was. As part of the programme, Leeston Swimming Club organised the carnival held on Saturday evening, and the local ministers undertook the arranging of the united church service. That both were most successful indicated the excellence of the arrangements and the support given by the residents of the district.
