AN EVENING CARNIVAL

JLEESTON BATH TO-MORROW

The district is greatly indebted to Mr H. T. Schou for his help and enthusiasm in arranging for a strong team of Canterbury and Dominion champion swimmers to visit Leeston to-morrow evening for the swimming carnival arranged in connexion with the Fitness Campaign. It is easily the best team ever to visit the district and it is hoped that residents throughout Ellesmere and Springs will show, by attendance at the carnival, their appreciation of the voluntary Ifelp offered by the members of the team to make a success of the local Fitness Campaign.

Mr Schou reports that the following will be included in the team: —A T. F. Stokes, New Zealand 440 yards, 880 yards, and mile champion; L. W. J. Newell, Canterbury champion and ex-New Zealand champion; M. T. Butterick, ex-New Zealand University champion; H. Horsfall, Canterbury breaststroke champion; W. Hart, New Zealand junior surf champion, holder New Zealand intermediate breaststroke record; J. S. Macdonald, exhibition of fancy swimming; I. Carson, A. Cameron, A. Con, N. Davidson, and H. T. Schou; Misses P. Hill, B. Bryant, and B. Christie. The Fendalton Club will again be represented by a strong team.

The bath has been greatly improved this season, the improvements including concreting around the sides, a new springboard, and stop watch. An innovation is the introduction of racing tapes, which prevent fouling by cross-swimming. Electric light has been installed and 1000 candlepower light will be used to-morrow evening. A suitable programme has been drawn up, starting with races for local swimmers, followed by events for Fendalton visitors and then displays by the champions. The concluding event is to be an interclub race.

The officials are as follows:— Starter and time-keeper, Mr R. A. Burgess; announcer, Mr H. D. Jones; judges, Messrs Cartwright and Ridden; handicapper, Mr I. Smith; doorkeeper, Mr A. McMillan.

The events are:—2s.yards district men's free-style handicap; 25 yards district women's free-style; 25 yards men's handicap (Fendalton, Leeston, and district clubs), 25 yards boy; under 18, Leeston diving competition. 50 yards open free-style, Fendalton Club race, Christchurch women's exhibition swim, Christchurch men's backstroke, mixed breaststroke, fancy diving by Mr Macdonald, open diving, inter-club relay.
