FINAL ARRANGEMENTS 'fTtR. THE WEEK-END
A lot of local rivalry had been evoked and the prospects were that there would be a number of teams participating in the tug-of-war, was the report made by Mr J. A. Scott at the meeting of the committee of the Springs-Ellesmere Fitness Demonstration last night. This event is scheduled to take place at Leeston this evening. Mr G. H. Ryde and the two secretaries were appointed to take charge of the competition. The other event in to-night's programme is a relay race for members of football teams and arrangements for this were also finalised. The meeting was attended by a good representation of members of the committee and was presided over by the chairman, Mr A. Anderson, who reported that the organising work was well ahead and that a very good programme had been arranged for to-morrow (Saturday) afternoon;
The secretaries, Messrs T. Moorhouse and J. A. Scott, reported that the Methven Pipe Bancl had been engaged to play for the parade and during the afternoon; and that it was expected that a dozen members would be present. The parade would move off at 1.30 p.m. and on arrival at the showgrounds would be drawn up in order when an address on physical fitness would be given by Mr F. G. Dunn, of Christchurch, Canterbury representative of the National Council for Physical Welfare and Recreation. Following this would be a number of events, the programme being timed to conclude about 5 p.m. The items will include a pony potato race by school children; children's display, exhibition of gymnastic exercises by 20 members of V.M.C.A. classes; two athletic events; display by Leeston Volunteer Fire Brigade; exhibition of fencing by Christchurch Swords Club; Boy Scouts display by the troop from Lincoln; military display by members of the Motor Cycle Corps; golf driving; trap shooting by members of the Ellesmere Gun Club; finish of road cycle race.
With regard to the exhibition of trap-shooting to be given by xd^)^ bers of the gun club, it was pointed out that the club made it a strict condition that the area used for this display should be kept clear of the public. Arrangements for doing so were made at the meeting.
It was agreed that school children riding ponies could take part in the parade.
Comedy items had also been arranged for at the showgrounds.
A public address system had been arranged for to broadcast the speech ahd announcements to be made during the afternoon, Mr H. D. Jones to have charge.
Messrs B. Brown, Moorhouse, and Scott were appointed a postponement r committee. In event of postponement the announcement will be made over the air between 12 and 12.15 p.m.
Complimntary references were made to the work done by the secretaries in arranging the programme and organising the display and they were accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
