A MODERN SAMSON
UNIQUE FEATS OF STRENGTH
(From The Guardian's London Correspondent)
LONDON, September 10,
Hit Jean Challard on the neck with a steel bar half a dozen times—and it is the bar that will be hurt! The experiment was tried this week at his home at Eltham, Kent, and sure enough it was the bar that bent. Nephew of the world-famous Sandow, Jean Challard is slightly built, going bald, a little over sft. 7Jin. and weighs no more than list. 81b. No one could look less like a world champion steel bender and strong man that he. "I defy any man in this world to withstand the pressure of my grip round his stomach—and that's a challenge," he declared. "Providing I can get a comfortable grip, with my left hand on my right wrist, I will bring down any man, yes, including all-in wrestlers, boxers, navvies, and professional men. Although lam now over thirty I can still bring down a bullock, by strangulation, inside three minutes." He demonstrated some of his Sam-son-like feats. Using his teeth as a vyce he broke a horseshoe, an inch thick. Then he took a 2ft. steel bar and, using his teeth as a pivot, he bent it with ease. Holding the bent bar in his right hand, he straightened it with a few powerful blows across the left forearm.
