SINGLE-HANDED VOYAGE
NORTH ATLANTIC CROSSING
(From The Guardian's London
Correspondent)
LONDON, October 1
Skipper Dod Orsborne, the man who made the famous runaway voyage in the Grimsby trawler, Girl Pat, is making final preparations for his next venture. He is to attempt to cross the North Atlantic from London to New York alone in a sailing vessel 19ft. in length.
"I am going to call her the 'Little Elizabeth/ after the liner €hat has just been launched," he said this week. "She has been specially built for me and will be delivered in London this week. There is no engine in her as I shall sail all the way."
Special water tanks have been built in the keel of the vessel, in which Dod will carry enough stores to last five months. He will not carry a radio. "I don't know how long I shall take to make the trip," said Skipper Orsborne, "because I shall be relying on the wind and weather. To keep my strength I shall have to sleep four hours out of every twenty-four. If everything goes well I should reach New York in just over a month."
