GAS FROM WOOD
NEW FUEL FOR SHIPS
GERMANS ESTIMATE BIG /_. j_ SAVINGS Y^Y-
(From The Guardian's London
Correspondent)
LONDON, October 8. As part of her campaign to render herself independent of foreign supplies, Germany is busy building ships driven by gas. There are already 36 of these vessels operating on inland* waterways. Now the principle is to be adopted in large ocean ships.
The vessels fitted with gas propul- * ision show a saving of £1000 a year , '"' on running costs over ordiharily propelled ships. Instead of crude oil, "producer gas" made from wood, semi-coke or,anthracite is used. The latest gas ship to be placed in ser->_ vice is the Ernst Tengelmann, which has a 1000 h.p. engine. *"' Gas ships need careful attention. jY German engineers have therefore been '«*■ instructed to "remember the lot of their fathers, who often had to Be / their own stokers, besides attending to the exacting requirements of a : i steam engine."
