IRWELL

SCHOOL SOCIAL AND PRESENTATION.

The usual fortnightly social was held in the Schoolroom on Saturday evening. The most successful card players were Miss A. Millar and Mr L. Buckley, the consolation awards going to Mr Coe and Miss E. Coe. Monte Carlo prizes given by Miss Grace Smith were won by Mr and Mrs Bodger.

The opportunity was taken to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Cox and family, who are leaving to take up residence in Christchurch. Mr Baylis, in presenting a cheque to Mr and Mrs Cox, spoke of the good work they had done in connexion with the school. Mr R. Barnett also spoke in high terms of praise. Mr Cox had been sole teacher at the Irwell School for four years and had endeared himself to all the children.

Mr Cox suitably replied after the singing of "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows." Music for the dancing was supplied by Miss E. Coe and Messrs L. Coe and I. Eden. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" brought the evening to a close. PRESENTATION TO MR DOAK.

After the meeting of the Irwell Cricket Club last Monday night, a

social gathering was held at the residence of Mr L. B. Coe. During the evening the president, Mr John Heslop, made a presentation on behalf of the club to Mr W. Doak, who is shortly to be married. Mr Heslop referred to the great service rendered to the club by Mr Doak during the 18 years he had been a member, and wished him and his future bride all prosperity and happiness. -

Mr L. B. Coe, in supporting the president's remarks, said that Mr Doak's enthusiasm and love for the game were shown by the fact that since he had been a member of the club he had missed only one match.

Mr Doak, in his reply, thanked the club members for their kindness, saying that the presentation and the evening had come as a complete surprise to him, and that he looked forward to many more enjoyable games with the club.

Before the gathering broke up, Mr D. M. Lill thanked Mr and Mrs L. B. Coe and family for their kindness and hospitality to the club.
