UNWANTED FOREIGNERS
EXPULSION FROM ENGLAND
(From The Guardian's Special Corres-
pondent—By Air Mail)
LONDON, August 14
Further expulsions from England of unwanted foreign propagandists are likely to follow the sending home this week of three German journalists. A thorough investigation has revealed to the Home Office that thousands of aliens of all nationalities are abusing Britain's hospitality by organising political campaigns from their place of refuge. A list is now being prepared of hundreds of aliens who, in the near future, will be told that their permits to remain in Britain cannot be renewed.
During the past season 400,000 foreigners have visited Britain. Inquiries which have been going on for months now prove that many of these, taking advantage of the personal freedom allowed to every individual here, are actively engaged on pro- or anti-Nazi political work It is not so much that the authorities fear espionage directed against Britain, but that the present delicate international situation may be complicated by subversive actions by foreigners living in Britain. There is a section of Germans whose activities are devoted to pushing Nazi propaganda in favour of Hitler's policy.
Scotland Yard's special branch has employed its best linguists in a "Nazi Squad" to keep careful check on Berlin propagandists since 1935. Attending functions among all classes they have secured ample evidence to warrant action by the Home Office. Extra vigilance at the ports and at the Aliens Office at Bow street, where foreigners have to report periodically to-the-, police, will be observed.
