OBITUARY
MRS WALTER BARNETT.
A well-known resident of Lakeside, Mrs Barnett, whose connexion with the district went back to her early schooldays, passed away at her home on Monday evening, after a lengthy illness, at the age of 64 years. A daughter of the late Mr James Winchester, one of the early settlers at Lakeside, she was educated at the Lakeside School and lived in the district until her marriage. In September of 1903, she was married to Mr Walter John Barnett, son of the late Mr John Barnett, of "Deep Spring," at St. David's Presbyterian Church, Leeston. They made their home at Woodend, where Mr Barnett was in the service of the Sefton Dairy Company. When Mr Barnett died in 1916 his wife returned to Lakeside and took up farming, and her industry was rewarded with a good deal of success. In course of time her two sons, Messrs Gordon and Percy Barnett, were able to give valuable help in the working of the property. Both are now well-known farmers at Lakeside.
By all who knew her Mrs Barnett was held in the highest regard. She was always willing to help any worthy cause, and the hospitality received in her home will long be remembered by her many friends. Outside the affairs of her farm and home her chief interest in recent years was in the affairs of the Leeston Methodist Church, of which she was a staunch member. Always a loyal friend, Mrs Barnett will be greatly missed by many who came into frequent contact with her.
The interment took place privately on Wednesday at Woodend and was preceded by a service in the Methodist Church, which was almost filled, many of those present being friends who knew Mrs Barnett when she lived in that district. They were responsible for a tasteful display of flowers in the church. The services in the church and at the graveside were conducted by the Revs.. S. Bailey (Leeston) and Neale (Woodend). Miss Esther Burnet was organist. Those who acted as bearers were Messrs R. Lambie, J. Anderson (school mates), I. Mawson, L. Winchester, R. Winchester and W. H. Winchester (nephews).
Floral tributes were received from the following:—Gordon and Greta; Percy; wee grandchildren; Leslie and John; Dr. and Mrs Cattell; Willie, Tot and family; Gordon, Daisy and family (Tirau); Dawson family; Robt.
