LOCAL AND GENERAL

To-morrow evening the first of a series of five euchre and dance socials will be held in Sedgemere Hall in aid of the school funds.

The Southbridge Rugby Football Club has arranged a smoke concert for next Tuesday evening in honour of its first and second grade teams, winners of the competitions.

An interesting evening is assured those who attend the Salvation Army Hall next Monday at 8 p.m. Major and Mrs Podmore and family will be giving a programme including a "Tiny Town" wedding, and each ticket-holder will receive a gift to the value of Is.

Tuesday, October 5, is - the date chosen for a notable social event at Southbridge, the annual fancy dress ball in connexion with St. James's Anglican Church. Preparations are already in hand and two enthusiastic young ladies have been chosen as joint secretaries, Misses R. Greenwood and C. Carter. Twenty prizes will be awarded, and Mr Fred Smith's Orchestra has been engaged.

A rather curious coincidence in connexion with the cutting of the outlet from Lake Ellesmere to the sea was mentioned by a member at the meeting of the Ellesmere Lands Drainage Board on Wednesday. He said that within 48 hours of the opening of the cut, large quantities of flounders were obtained from the beach at Timaru, and' fishermen there always knew by this sign when the outlet at Taumutu was open.

This (Friday) evening, in the Methodist Church, Leeston and district residents will be afforded the unique opportunity of hearing one of the foremost of the Methodist Church's native missioners on the Solomon Islands field, the Rev. Belshazzar Gina. He is a brilliant and forcible speaker and has a wonderful story to tell of the work of the Mission in the Islands and the great opportunity which exists for further expansion. Mr Gina will, in addition, sing songs in the native and European languages and will also give instrumental items. Assistance will also be given by the Shirley Methodist Choir of 30 voices, a welltrained organisation with an excellent reputation.
