WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

BIRTHDAY PARTY AT LEESTON.

There was an excellent attendance at the sixth birthday party of the Leeston Women's Institute, held in the Town Hall. The visitors were welcomed by the president, Miss Bowis. The afternoon opened with the singing of the Institute ode. A posy was presented to Miss Bowis (president) and sprays to Miss Doak (treasurer) and Mrs Wright (secretary). A most enjoyable programme was given by the members and included solos by Mrs Sewell and Miss Eade, a recitation by Miss C. Bailey, and an instrumental item by Miss J. Bowis. An amusing chorus, "Riding Down From Bangor," and a very well acted charade were also given. A competition was won by Mrs Pilkington (Southbridge). The candles on the birthday cake were lit by the vice-presidents, Mrs J. B. Anderson and Mrs Gorman, and the cake was cut by Miss Bowis. Congratulations and good wishes were extended to the institute by the following visiting institute members:—Mrs Pilkington (Southbridge), Mrs Brooks (Brookside), Mrs Dick (Lakeside), Miss Bryce (Night Circle) and Miss C. Aldridge (Dunsandel branch W.D.F.U.).

The serving of a dainty afternoon tea and the singing of the National Anthem brought a pleasant afternoon to a close.
