SOUTHBRIDGE CLUB'S

CARNIVAL.

VISIT FROM OPAWA CLUB

Weather conditions were not too favourable for the carnival of the Southbridge Swimming Club, held in the Southbridge bath on Saturday afternoon, and pressure of harvesting work no doubt had an adverse effect on the number of competitors and spectators. A number of competitors came from the Opawa Club (Christchurch) and their visit made the afternoon's sport more interesting. Some good racing was seen and the the finishes in two or three of the races were close and exciting. The club's secretary (Mr J. Beamsley) had the programme and preliminary work ready for the occasion. Valuable assistance during the afternoon was rendered by Messrs G. B. Couch (as starter), R. Bruce (timekeeper), Dr. Hunt and R. B. Willis (judges), and J. Hannah. Afternoon tea was supplied and served by women members of the club.
