HINTS
To Whiten Blankets: Nail some strong string criss-cross on top of a large box or barrel. Put some hot cinders on a shovel, add _Jb. of rock sulphur, and place the shovel in the bottom of the box. After washing the blankets in the usual way, lay them on the string over the barrel and cover with an old sheet to prevent the fumes from escaping. Leave for half an hour, then turn the blankets and leave for another half-hour. Then dry the blankets and you will find that they are beautifully white and fluffy. The baking process prevents shrinkage and is also a safeguard, against infection. The Empty Grate: In the summer months when you feel you can't tear the sight of your desolate empty grate, collect two or three Togs, some fir cones, pieces of firewood and crepe paper, either red or green. Paint the ends of the logs and some of the fir cones with aluminium paint, then arrange the wood and cones on top of the crinkly paper, and if more background is needed, touch up a few twigs with aluminium paint and arrange them round the back of the grate. ; s.
Stained Shoes: Don't polish shoes when stained with sea water; polishing only deepens the stains. Instead, dissolve a small piece of washingsoda in an eggcupful of hot water and rub well into the stain. When dry, polish the shoes in the usual way.
