ATHLETICS

DOYLESTON CLUB.

Mr W. C. Beamsley, president, was in the chair at a meeting of the Doyleston Athletic Club, held last night. Others present were Messrs W. H. Fussell (hon. secretary), W. Pearce, J. Williams, C. Tod, J. T. Cooke, J. Maw, C. F. Turner, W. W. Mitchell, J. Bowis, D. Welsh, F. Negus and R. Tweedy.

The president reported that he had attended a meeting of representatives of sports bodies held in Christchurch on Wednesday evening, to discuss arrangements for the visit of two crack athletes from Australia, who would be competing in Christchurch on January 4. It was desired that each club in the district should either give prizes for one of the races or make a donation. However, it was decided to circularise the clubs on the subject.

The secretary also reported on the visit to Christchurch, making particular reference to his contact with the Centre officials and delegates generally. It was desired that the club should provide encouragement for novices at its Boxing Day sports. From his conversation with the officials and others he felt confident that good support would be forthcoming for the Doyleston Club's sports.

It was also desired to have a road race for novices to Doyleston on sports day, in which case the novices would compete in two special events provided for them at the sports. Centre officials estimated that .at least 24 riders would compete in the road race, for which the Novice Centre would provide the prizes. The expense to the club would be very ■small, but the events would prove a strong attraction.

It was agreed to add a road race and two events for novices to the club's sports programme.

The president and secretary were thanked for attending the conference. .

Discussion took place in regard to the racing track, which members were agreed would require some attention before the sports. It was agreed to have the grader run over it at a suitable opportunity after a period of fine weather.

The president undertook to make inquiries as to whether the County Council's horse grader could be secured for work on the track, and he and Mr Mitchell are to inspect the machine.

Two new members, Messrs Ramsey and Ashton, were elected.

It was decided to hold the usual dance on sports night, whether the weather is wet or fine, and to engage Mr Fred Smith's Orchestra.

It was agreed to hold the next meeting on December 5, when officials for the sports will be appointed.
