Within the past few days inquiries have been received from New York buyers of butter by exporters in New Zealand. It is understood that sales have been made at about Is per lb. f.0.b., the total amount which has changed hands being between 1000 and 2000 boxes. The first shipment left by the steamer Canadian .Conqueror. The present price in New York is about 35 cents per lb., but there is an import duty of 14 cents. Stocks in New York are fairly heavy, and it is doubtful whether there ; wilL"^^,, be much opening for New Zealand butter. The demand from New York is a seasonal one, corresponding with the approach of the northern winter. Early this year there was a definite { shortage of butter in New York and ' considerable buying was done on the ' United States' account. Prior to that the New York market had not taken any quantities for some years.
