GRETA GARBO
HER REAL PERSONALITY.
(From the Guardian's Special Corres-
pondent—By Air Mail)
LONDON, September 28
Miss Greta Garbo is an amazing and beautiful personality of complete simplicity and profound depth. There is no one like her in the entire film world. "She is the perfect actress for author or director. If any of her films are less than perfect she is never to blame."
That is the opinion of Mr Gene Markey, the famous American author and scenario writer, who wrote for Miss Garbo both "Inspiration" and "As You Desire Me." He is now in London writing for Capitol Films the scenario of his novel, "His Majesty's Pyjamas," in which Mr Clive Brook and Miss Helen Vinson are to play under the direction of Mr Alfred Werker.
"The difficulty with which Miss Garbo has to contend is that she has become a legend, and this unfortunately obscures her real personality. She is not in the least mysterious," he said. "In the studio she is the easiest person in the world to work with. She absorbs dialogue and situations instantly. She needs very little rehearsing and nearly always improves on the material she is given. This is not because she changes the action or dialogue. It is because she adds to drama so much by virtue of her talents and herself. She refuses to work beyond her time in the studio. She says 'I'm going home,' and no power on earth can keep her. She likes to take long walks alone. One day she told me that she had walked round a lake, stopping only for a meal of bread and cheese. I know that lake. It is twenty-four miles round."
