BROOKSIDE
The monthly meeting of the Brookside Women's Institute was held on Friday, Mrs F. S. Candy presiding over a good attendance. An appeal from St. Saviour's Orphanage was read, and donations of produce, cakes and other goods may be left at the Schoolhouse, and will be forwarded. It was decided to buy 5/worth of health stamps for institute correspondence, members to buy their own stamps from the teachers at the school. In the absence of Mrs King, Christchurch, who, through pressure of work, was unable to be present, Mrs Rowell and Mrs Bongard very kindly consented to give the floral demonstration. Members were shown how to decorate a basket, vase, and dinner table, and how to make a Victorian posy, all of which proved most interesting. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mesdames Rowell and Bongard, both for their demonstration and for judging the competitions. The competition for the best arranged vase of spring flowers resulted in Mrs J. Brooks and Mrs W. B. Cunningham being placed equal first, Mrs Cridge second, and Mrs Saunders third. The best bloom in the garden competition was won by Mrs Saunders, with Mrs J. Brooks second and Mrs W. Graham third. During the social half-hour a treasure hunt was won by Mrs L. Washbourne. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Boag, A. E. Withell and J. Hight.
