Mr J. Chamberlain, a former resident of Lakeside, and uncle of this year's president of the Ellesmere A. and P. Association, was a visitor to the show last Thursday.
Mr J. Shearer, a notable Ashburton breeder of Clydesdale horses, was present at the Ellesmere Show. He was breeding and exhibiting horses more than 50 years ago, and was as ever keenly interested in them on Thursday.
Among those present at the Ellesmere Show last Thursday was Mr John Suttie, a very early settler in this district, farming- at Doyleston, and later at Brookside", before removing to the Ashburton county, where he now resides. He was a keen competitor in the blade-shearing contests at various shows long before the shearing-machine was invented.
The funeral of the late Margaret McConnell, wife of Mr R. J. McConnell, of Leeston, took place on Saturday afternoon, the interment being at the Ellesmere Cemetery. Mrs McConnell was the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs James Williamson, of Lakeside, and is survived by her husband, two sisters and two brothers (Mesdames R. Seaton, Ashburton, Mrs T. J. Fussell, Leeston, Messrs James Williamson, Christchurch, and S. Williamson, Ashburton). There was a large attendance at the service at the graveside which was conducted by the Rev. D. N. Pryor. The bearers were Messrs T. J. Fussell, S. Williamson, J. Williamson and W. Williamson.
