LATE MR R. CLELAND.

Early settlers in the Springston district will learn with regret of the death of Mr Robert Cleland, of Belfast, which occurred after a very brief illness. Mr Cleland was born in County Down, Ireland, and came to New Zealand in the ship "Taranaki." He lived for many years at Springston, where he was highly respected as man of sterling character. He later moved to Wakanui and Mayfield, and for over twenty years he farmed successfully in the Ashburton district, retiring later to his home at Belfast, where he resided for seven years. The large attendance at his funeral testified to the high esteem in which he was held. The services were conducted by the Rev. G. Wood, of £>tyx, assisted by Rev. G. K. Aitken. Mr Cleland leaves a widow and grown-up family to mourn their loss.
