OBITUARY

MR JOHN ANDERSON.

A former headmaster of the Leeston school, Mr John Anderson, died at his home, 42 Francis Avenue, Christehurch, on New Year's Day.

Mr John Anderson was born in London in 1848, and was trained as an engineer at Woolwich Arsenal: In 1880 he came out to New Zealand, and settled at Dunedin, where he studied at Otago University, being one of its earliest students. He then entered the teaching .profession, and was in turn headmaster of the Stonycreek, Winton, Rakaia, Tai Tapu, Leeston, and Amberly public schools.

Mr Anderson had always been an enthusiast on Technical education, and had the distinction of being the founder of Technical schools in Canterbury, having about 1892 organised classes in wood and metalwork at Leeston. Later in Amberley he built and supervised a Technical School, in which were conducted classes in woodwork, wool-classing, cookery and dressmaking for children and adults. After retiring from Amberly School Mr Anderson, with Mrs Anderson, visited England, and on their return to Christehurch settled in Francis Avenue. Mr Anderson had a long Masonic career, having joined the old lonic Lodge at Leeston, which later became defunct. On his removal to Amberley he became master of the Amberley Lodge, and joined the Canterbury Lodge after his retirement to Christehurch. He was a Past District Grand Warden of the latter Lodge. Mr Anderson is survived by his widow and two daughters—Mrs G. H. Moody, of Stewart, British Columbia, who arrived recently in Christehurch, and Miss Winifred Anderson, of Wellington. Miss Anderson is a well known judge at horticultural and home produce 3hows.
