DEATH OF MRS CAIRNS.
ESTEEMED LAKESIDE RESIDENT.
(Contributed)
In the death of Mrs Cairns, which took place early last Sunday morning, the district has lost another of its well known identities, and one who was held in the highest esteem by all who knew her. The deceased lady was born in 1876 and was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs J. Patterson, who were sturdy and much respected residents in this district a decade or more ago. Mrs Cairns spent nearly the whole" of her life in the Lakeside and Sedgcmcre districts, ' where she made many friends. For some little while back, the lato Mrs Cairns's health had not been all that could be desired, but nevertheless she continued with her duties until about five weeks ago, when she was advised to go into St. George's Hospital for treatment. An operation was found necessary, and at first hopes .were entertained of her recovery, but it soon became apparent that her strength was waning, and that death would ultimately supervene. Of her many friends, those who knew her best esteemed her most. She was one of the few who put the welfare of others before that of her own. She was always kind and cheerful in her manner, and her life all along was lived on high Christian principles. In her desire to serve others she may have at times placed an undue strain upon herself, but she never wavered in doing what she conceived to be her duty. In herself, she was broad-minded and large-hearted. Her sympathies went out to all, and her charity was ever liberal in any good cause. Mrs Cairns's husband predeceased her many years ago, but she leaves an only daughter, Mrs J. ; Johnston, now of Tai Tapu, for whom the deepest sympathy is felt in her bereavement. The funeral took place at Sedgemere on Tuesday last in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends. The Rev. J. A. Shardlow conducted the burial service, while Mr A. J. Inwood assisted at the organ. The pall bearers were Messrs W.. Mcllraith, W. Johnston, J. Patterson and W. Ludemann. Floral tributes were sent by the following:—Mr and Mrs W. M.
