A CHRISTMAS MORNING CRASH

Thomas John Gulliver admitted a charge of having driven a motor car in a negligent manner on the South-bridge-Taumutu road in the early hours of Christmas morning. The police stated that soma time I after 3 a.m. on Christmas Day defendant was driving a car from Southbridge towards Taumutu. At the point known as Shellock's corner be kept on the right side of the road instead of to the left and came into collision with a car proceeding front Taumutu to Southbridge, owned by J. Brown and driven by Huri Taiaroa. In answer to the Magistrate defendant said he did not see the other car approaching. It was nearly daylight when the collision occurred. Brown's car suffered damage to the extent of about £50, which he had arranged, to pay. HURFS VIOLENT MEETING. Huri Taiaroa, driver of Brown 'a car, admitted a ' charge of not being the holder of a license to drive. The Magistrate: How is it that yo.u didn't have a license! Defendant said he had a driver's license about two years ago. but since then he had not required one, as he had not been driving. On the morning or ■ the accident he had driven the ear ut the request of Brown, who was with him at the time, as Brown had no driver's license. Brown's son, who had a license, usually drove forTiiin, but he was not available that morning. The Magistrate: What were you doing out at that hour of the morning? Defendant: We thought that Gulliver, who had been out carolling, had had a breakdown, and so we went to meet him. - . "And you did meet-him," commented Mr Young, amidst laughter. In reply to questions defendant said that the lights on'both cars were- alight at the time.
