Mr William Owen, parish clerk and verger at St. Thomas's Church, Coventry, is retiring after 42 years' service, during which he has attended over 3,000 weddings, 6,000 baptisms and 7,000 funerals. The oldest wine in the world is on exhibition at Speyer, Germany. It is Roman wine, recently dug up, and is estimated to be 1600 years old. It is partly solidified, for Romans put honeyin their wine. Smoking a pipe or cigarette is the novel preventive of seasickness suggested by a recent writer in the British Medical Journal.
