COUNTY WORKS
ENGINEER'S REPORT
In the course of his report to the i Springs County Council yesterday, the county engineer (Mr H. Neale) stated that the metal crushing plant had-been working during the month in the Bluegum reserve, from which 435 cubic yards of metal had been put out. Carting from the crusher with his motor truck Mr H. F. Williams had put out 240 cubic yards on the old Selwyn road and 15 on the Brookside road towards Rolleston. Since assisting at the crusher Mr H. Benny had been carting shingle with his team from '< Coe's Ford to Lake and Selwyn Huts1 roads and to the footpath fronting the Springston South School. Messrs J. and H. Benny had been for six days reforming that part of Hudson's road .adjacent to the lake by Mr GK W. R. Osborne's land, and one man had been for three days doing some levelling. The cost of this work was £19/16/-. I* adition to the formation of the road Mr H. F. Williams had carted 60 cubic yards of crushed, shingle from Lincoln pit at 11/- a yard, putting the shingle where required! The total cost, including crushing, was £64/16/-. Mr J. Benny's team had been at work for six days grading various roads, and the main highway was ■ now receiving attention. The Audit Inspector had examined/ the accounts on December 4 and 5, and the balance-sheet had been returned from Wellington duly certified. The matter of providing electric pumps for the Council cottages occupied by Messrs J. Benny and J. Godfrey re- [ quired some further consideration by the Council owing to th^ conditions exisiting at the source of the water ! supplyArrangements had been made for a survey of Eaglesome 's road. In regard to the instructions given that the matter of improving the drain on Day's road, fronting part of Messrs E. H. Rowell and G. Tyson's land, should be reported upon, he had found that during the recent heavy rain the land adjoining the drain was flooded. This occurred whenever heavy rain fell. The bottom of the drain in parts was studded with wood and needed straightening and deepening in places for about 25 or 30 chains. The spoil could be used to. raise and improve the opposite side of the road.
