By dropping from an aeroplane for a distance of 4,500 ft. before opening his parachute, Mr John Tranum set up a record in January at Los Angeles. Now he aims at dropping a mile through space, during which he will attain a speed of over 240 m.p.h. According to the American Labour Ministry, the amount of work done per man in blast furnaces rose from 25 tons in 1850 to 1257 tons in 1925. During this period the number of men employed in this industry only rose by 44 (per cent., while the prduction.rose more than 7000 per cent. This is a significant and striking proof of the- saving of labour by the use of machinery.
