PERSONAL

Mr W. J. Doyle, sen., was suddenly taken ill on Sunday and had to be hurried into hospital for an operation. He is still reported to be seriously ill, the cause, it is understood, being peritonitis.

Mr A. D. Carroll, of "Gum Grove," Southbridge, met with a painful accident last Thursday. He was descending a deep well to attend to the pump at the bottom, when the ladder gave way and he fell, striking a stake which was projecting some three or four feet above the bottom, and suffering internal injury. Dr. Hunt was promptly in attendance, and ordered the patient's removal to the Christchurch Hospital, where he underwent an operation the same evening. He is now making satisfactory progress.
