NEWS AND NOTES.

The .'crops in the Springston South district are looking remarkably well at/present, and'-'this morning's rain will do them a lot of good, besides helping on the pastures. Mr and Mrs W. H. Kirk; of Geraldine, have been the guests of Mr and Mrs H. Hamilton over the week-end. They attended the Springston School jubilee and returned home on Tuesday. Miss Harris, of Geraldine, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs N. Powr }U, has returned home. Mr and Mrs 0. G. Judson, ef Clarkevjlle, returned to their home on Monday evening after spending the weekend with Mr'and Mrs T. J. Kimber. Mr A. R. Powell motored to Hanmer Springs oh • Saturday, and returned home on Tuesday. The many friends of Miss Eva Musson will be glad to hear that she is making satisfactory progress after her .recent serious operation in Oakhurst Private Hospital, Ashburton. , , ■ Sister Christian, of the Red Cross Society, gave the first of a series of lectures on home nursing in the Springston South Hall on Wednesday evening. Mrs Ryan has been elected president of the local branch and Mrs Newstead secretary. A large number of people visited the Huts for Labour Day. . Coe's Ford was well patronised on Sunday and Monday by picnickers. Mrs M. Bruland, of Invercargill, is the guest of her brother, Mr T. Blay. She attended the Springston School jubilee and is returning home at the end of the week. Mr C. N. C. Powell's host of friends among the shooting fraternity were delighted to see him participating in the matches held by the Springston Gun Club on Monday (Ladies' Day), after a lengthy spell as a competitor, due, to the severe accident he met with several months ago.
