AN EXCUSE FOR THE LAIRD

In-the village of Huntly there lived a married couple whom we will call Tarn and Janet, in a block of-buildings which were badly in need of repair. One night a perfect hurricane arose; and the houses, being in such a bad condition, the rain began to drip through a hole in the ceiling. Janet, seeing this, grew alarmed, and bade Tarn get out the bed and put a pail down to catch the drops. In the morning when they got up Janet said to her husband:—

"Tarn, ye maun gang tae the laird an' see about this. We canna pit up wi' it ony longer; we maun hae something dime." Tarn meekly replied: "I'm no sac shair about that, Janet. If 1 gang an' I ell him that he'll be for raising the rent five shillings seem' we've got -the water in the hoo^-e."
