LEESTON STOCK SALE TO-DAY. < With the fortnightly stock sale held 1 at Leeston to-day was combined the 1 annual sale of dairy cattle. The mar- 1 ket was held under ideal spring wea- 1 ther conditions, and there was a very < good attendance. The departments in < which entries showed a large prepon- < I derance were - those for store pigs and ] cattle. Of the former there were over < 300 head, while the cattle, which comprised springers chiefly, totalled be- ; tween 70 and 80 head. There were only a few sheep and fat pigs, the former selling very readily at prices well up to those ruling at the previous sale. There was little change in fat pigs, but because of the supply being greatly in excess of the local demand, store pig values fell considerably below the anticipations of vendors, sales being difficult to make towards the finish. Usually at this* time of the year store pigs sell very well owing to the demand from, dairy farmers, but to-day the supply was unusually large and there was only a very limited demand from buyers outside the district. The better class of springers met with a fairly keen enquiry, and prices for these were satisfactory, but inferior sorts were not much in demand, especially if they were aged sorts. The sheep sales comprised 8 fat wethers at 40/-, 11 at 36/1, 18 store wethers 18/-, 4 at 21/Top price for bacon pigs was £4 12s 6d, others bringing £3 3s 6d to £3 14s 6d, porkers 42/6 to 59/6, large stores 24/8 to 33/-, medium from 16/-, weaners from 6/-, sows in pig £2 6s to £3* 17s 6d, sow and litter £3 2s 6d. A line of springers sent in by Mr D. W. Prosser made £6 to £12, a bull £8, a line of yearlings £4 17s 6d. Other springers ranged from £10 10s to £14 for best sorts and from £4 to £8 los for medium sorts.
