On a charge of failing to send a child to school regularly Alexander Freeman was, fined 10/- and.costs 12/----"If the child doesn't attend regu-^ larly in future you" had better folloi^v the case up," said the magistrate to the truant officer (Mr J. A. Blank). QUESTION OF MAINTENANCE. In Josephine Karetai (Tanittutu) v. her husband, Joseph Karetai (Little River), a claim for maintenance, Mr C.."V. Quigley, who appeared for. plaintiff, stated that in January last an order had been made for maintenance at 15/- a week. At that time'the plain-tiff-did not have custody of a child of the marriage, which was held by defendant. When making the order for . maintenance, however, the magistrate had also ordered that Mrs Karetai .should be given -custody of the child, which had been subsequently . handed over to her. It was claimed that the maintenance order for 15/- was intended to cover only the plaintiff, and now application was being made for maintenance of the first child as well as for a second born on July 1. Mr A. S. Lyons, who appeared ftj£_ defendant, contended that in making the order for 15/- in January last the . magistrate intended it to cover tho wife and first child. Defendant -was quite willing to pay reasonable maintenance for the child born in July last. The magistrate, after perusing his notes, upheld Mr Lyons's contention. He ordered that defendant should pay maintenance for the second child at the rate of 15/- a week, as from the » date on which the mother left the Hospital (arrears £5 ss), plus medical and hospital expenses and solicitor's fee £2 2s.
