SLOW PROGRESS OF CREMATION

Last year 3266 cremations were carried oat in sixteen crematoria in Great Britain, as compared with 2877 the previous year. At the annual-meeting of j Cremation, Ltd., of England, Sir Thomas Holder stated that if only ten per cent, of the deaths in Britain were (followed by cremation the cost would be reduced to very much below that of the commonest form of burial. While expressing satisfaction, at the growth of the movement, Sir Thomas regretted that it was growing slowly in popularity. It was necessary to appeal to the poorer classes, among whom funeral customs were elaborate and expensive. Much prejudice had to be removed, and this could be done only by education.
