TECHNICAL ASSOCIATION

THE ANNUAL REPORT. r - A meeting of the Ellesmere Technical Association was held on Friday evening in the Technical Roon£» Pre- 1 sent: Messrs T. A. Stephens (chairman), R. M., Robertson, A. Tong, and the secretary (Miss G. M.-'Glanville)., The chairman made reference to the loss sustained through the death of Mr A. Webster and Mr W. H. Jamieson, and spoke of the interest both had taken in technical work. A vote of sym- _ pathy with the relatives was passed.. . The following annual report was read: — "During the past year the activities of the Association liave been confined to,a combined dressmaking and millinery class' held at Southbridge. The decision of the Department that no evening pupil be admitted at less than 30/----per year and no afternoon pupil at less than £2 10s per year, may have affected the classes, but the tuition is well worth that, and previous fees have been very low in comparison with those in other places. As the number (12) compulsory for the year" was not forthcoming in Leeston, no class could be held. "As will be seen from Inspector Austin's report, the combined class in Southbridge met with his approval, but this year it seems more advisable to have two separate dressmaking • classes of two hours a week each, one in Leeston and one in Southbridge, and> there is every prospect that both will be a success. There was not sufficient support to hold the. woodwork class last year. The Association-is fortunate in having such a conscientious dressmaking teacher as Miss Bohan resident *■ * in this district."

A report on'last year's work by Inspector Austin was read and considered very satisfactory. The balance sheet showed the finan-

ces of the Association to be in a good - condition- - •■
