SPRINGSTON

A TOKEN OF APPRECIATION.

At last night's largely attended meeting of Springston residents, held to further the arrangements for the Gymkhana to be held on Friday, the chairman, Mr J. W. Kime, made reference to the assistance the committee had received from the Ellesmere Guardian from the time the proposal to hold the Gymkhana was first mooted. The people of Springston had realised to a greater extent than ever before what a very great asset a well conducted provincial newspaper could be to any community. There was not nearly the same degree of interest and enthusiasm shown by the people in connexion with matters affecting * the welfare of the district in those cases where there was no local newspaper. The Guardian, which was a provincial newspaper 'of first-class standing, had won the respect of the people of Springston, and deserved their best thanks. As tangible evidence of the committees's appreciation, the chairman asked Mr McMillan's acceptance of a silver ink stand, suitably inscribed. "There is never any mud with the ink the Guardian uses," declared Mr Kime. Musical honours were accorded the recipient. Mr McMillan, who was taken completely by surprise, expressed his warm thanks for the committee's thoughtful token of appreciation and for the kind references made by the chairman to the standing of the district newspaper.
