The motorist in Berkeley, California, who kills a man is allowed to go free, ! but his car is impounded. This is said to be the most effective deterrent yet discovered for reckless driving. # # # According to the British authority, j Professor A. M. Low, it will be possible in 20 years' time to drive at 300 miles an hour in a completely enclosed car. « * * The Australian Federal Minister of Works is reported to have said that the arterial roads now being constructed would be a material factor in the defence of Australia, should the occasion ever arise. The roads were being laid down wide and strong enough to carry tremendously heavy traffic. * # *
A new French motor truck picks up its own load, slings it under the chassis and rolls away, dropping it where wanted by simply letting it down. The chassis and motor are raised 7ft. above the ground, giving a clearance of sft. under the framework, four legs carrying the wheels. The truck runs over the load, raised a few inches above the ground, four fight angled plates on ratchets reach under the load, which is lifted by engine power. * * *
; There is no danger of spreading spring leaves apart by driving a screwdriver between them, provided the body of the car has been jacked up in order to take the weight off the springs. Ordinary driving strains springs far more than would be possible for the car owner to do when spreading the leaves apart.

The best of these was not expensive considering the two comfortable beds which unite as a sofa during the day, the up-to-date cooking stove, cupboards, wash basin, and numerous looking-glasses. While there were several luxury cars at £3000 and over on show, there was one which transcends luxury. It was a car with a gold-plated chassis. It was guarded by a posse of police and detectives, for the chassis carried over £5000 worth of gold plate. So far no buyer has been announced. A contrast to some of the inexpensive smaller models was the Prince of Wales' new car. Its exterior is all black, the metal work of silver, and the interior is upholstered in beige-coloured suede, like the softest glove suede. On j one side is a small alcove, instead of the I usual bulging case, to hold brushes, i cigarette cases, etc. A car of simple ! severity and perfect taste. It was one of the highest priced show cars, costing much more than £3,000.
