OVERHEAD CAM-SHAFTS
At tho present time so much interest centres round the question of overhead cam-shafts for motor engines that some consideration of the problems involved is well merited.
A glance at the many forms of driving gear in existence is sufficient to show that, up to the present time, there is no unanimity as regards the probable solution • yet all the designs reveal an ! effort to achieve the same end, which is to lighten the reciprocating masses in the valve gear, with the consequent reduction of stresses in these vital parts. One of the first motor-cycles to reach the hands of the buying public in camshaft form was the Velocette, and this machine has a vertical shaft with a "bevel drive at each end. At the moment this is the most popular type of drive, for, in adition to the Velocette, it is adopted by the designers of the Norton, Calthorpe, Atlanta, and Guzzi, although details vary in each case.
