CHRISTMAS FAIR
TENNIS CLUB'S EFFORT.
LIABILITIES STLLL LARGE,
With a view to further reducing its liabilities, which still stand at a high figure, the Leeston Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club has arranged to conduct a Christmas Fair on Christmas Eve, Friday, December 23, on similar lines to the fair held last Christmas.
The decision was arrived at by a general meeting of the Club held last evening, with Mr R. G. Power in the chair. By permission of the Canterbury Seed Co., the fair will be located
in the company's grain store,
The following nominations for membership were accepted: Mesdames Mahon and Shilton (croquet), Rev. G. P. Hunt, Messrs W. M. Beynon, W. Johnston, R. Jaekman and A. S. Lyons (bowling), Messrs W. Bowden, R. Newton, R. Collier, Mrs Melntyre, Misses Fraser, Heslop, E. McLaughlin, N. and E. Jaekman and B. McClure (tennis).
Replying to an application for permission to conduct raffles for Christmas hampers, the Tinder-Secretary of Internal Affairs wrote that the Minis ter had no statutory authority to grant permits to raffle the class of goods stated. Extracts from the Act were given enumerating the type of articles for which permission could be granted to raffle. These included art specimens of various descriptions. The meeting decided to apply for permission to raffle a framed "picture/' of the value of £5. Arrangements were made to procure various side-shows for the fair, including a chocolate alley and spinning wheel. It was agreed to conduct a cake and sweets stall and possibly others, and to call a meeting of ladies, at the tennis courts next Saturday afternoon to elect stallholders and attend to all other arrangements. Members were reminded that their subscriptions were due and payable, and it was requested that those who had not yet paid should settle this month. It was desired to collect as much as possible before the new year commenced. The profits from last year's Christmas Fair amounted to £100, and it was hoped that at least this sum would be realised this year. Members were urged to make a serious effort to attain this goal. CROQUET GEAR MISUSED. The president mentioned that a complaint had come from the croquet section that some persons unknown had removed mallets from the pavilion for the purpose of playing on Sundays. Besides committing an infringement of the Club's rules by using the green on Sundays, a person other than a member was not entitled to use the equipment. The mallets had been roughly handled and one had been broken. If the cause of complaint did not cease, the Club would have tx> take further action.
