LOCAL AND GENERAL

Lake Ellesmere outlet still continues to run freely, and the lake is getting down to a fairly low level. Special entries for next Friday's ordinary stock sale and springer sale at Leeston are advertised to-day. At a special meeting the Southbridge Town Board appointed Mr J. D. McCluro to the positions of dayman and caretaker of the Town Board Hall, rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr J. Strutton. Mr MeClnre held both positions on a previous occasion. For a valuable trophy given by Mr E. B. V. Winter the Ellesmere Gun Club will hold a 12-bird sparrow match next Saturday. The match is to be decided on points,, a first barrel kill to count three, and a second barrel two. As a team is to be picked to defend the Vale Shield against another challenging club, a full muster of shooters is desired at Saturday's match. ' Aspirants for civic honours in the Southbridge Town District should overlook the fact that nominations close at noon to-morrow for the vacancy on the Town Board, Caused by the resignation of Mr J. S. McClelland. If there is more than one candidate a poll will be taken to-morrow week, August 31. It is understood that splendid entries have been received for the 36 miles South Island Championship Road Race, to be run next Saturday afternoon under the auspices of the Southbridge Athletic Club. Many of the Dominion's crack road racing men have entered in order to have a race prior to the big Timaru to Christchureh fixture a fortnight later. The handicaps are not yet available. The death recently occurred of Mr W. Lochhead's valuable mare, Marion, the dam of Audacious, who recently won the August Handicap, and who is now owned by Mr O. E. Hooper. Marion was the dam of eleven foals in succession, including Baynut, who gained many show prizes. She was a foal of Mermaid, who was bred by the late Mr Machattie, veterinary surgeori, of Leeston. , The Returning Officer of the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board announces the result of the postal ballot which was conducted for the purpose of electing delegates to represent the various districts on the Electoral: Committee, which meets in Wellington on the 25th August to consider the fifth annual report and accounts, and to elect three producers' representatives. For the North and Mid-Canterbury district, Messrs J. Carr, J. O. Coop and R.'M. Morten were returned.

There is a message for men in Strange's Sale advertisement in . this issue. A list of very liberal price reductions off clothing and mercery will appeal to our male readers, especially as the list includes garments for work and for leisure hours. These can safely be ordered by mail, as any goods not to the customer's liking may be exchanged or returned.. 62 Some scathing comments are being passed concerning the condition of the main road into Southbridge from Flood's corner. It has been very bad for some time, but especially so during the recent showery weather. Shingling work has been in progress during the last three weeks, but the contractor has not been able to get the worst part done. Jfo doubt there will be a big improvement once the shingling gets a chance to set, but during the wet weather the traffic has been ploughing furrows in the shingle. It the Town Board could secure the use of a light grader to run over the road occasionally, after the shingling' is done, avoiding, if possible, the stirring up of the earth or clay, it should bo possible to make a good surface in a short time. During the present showery weather, however, all roads are difficult to keep in order. The Southbridge Athletic Club should consider whether it is not taking an undue risk in having the finish of the road race in the main street. It would be very unfortunate if th*e success of the fixture should be marred by a serious accident.

\ A display which is attracting a good deal of notice is the excellent arrangement of the window of Mr B. O. Priddis, of Messrs Priddis and Co., the well known jewellers in Cathedral Square, and a very fine array of jewellery may be seen here. The attraction does not end there, as Mr Priddis is making a special reduction in prices for this month. Particular attention is called to engagement Kings, for which this firm is noted, and also Gentlemen's Lever Watches at 10/6, with a twelvemonths' guarantee. Do not fail to visit this establishment when you are visiting Christchurch. 6
