COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING.
The postponed monthly meeting of the Ellesmere County Council, held at Leeston on Tuesday afternoon, was attended by Cre J. Heslop (acting chairman), A. Quigley and J. Nixon.
PROPERTY TRANSFERS,
Motiees were received of the following property transfers: Trustees W. Nixon to H. McLenaghen, 43 acres; L. H. Ruddock to Colonel John Studholme, 87 acres; ,T. E. Christey to W. J". Hamilton, 103 acres; D. J. Byron to E. Davidson. 164 acres.
ECONOMICAL WORKING,
The Main Highways Board informed the council that subsidy would be payable on working plant only to the minimum extent that plant whs necessary.
HEAVY" TRAFFIC FEES,
The Christchurch City Council gave notice of a conference of local bodies' representatives to further consider, the allocation of heavy traffic fees.—Re-
ceived
The City Council forwarded a cheque for £321 19s 9d fees collected for 1926.
HOSPITAL COSTS,
A schedule of comparative hospital costs, as between Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington, was forwarded by the North Canterbury Hospital Board
for perusal.
HIGHWAYS SUBSIDY,
From the Main Highways Board the Council received a cheque for £401 los 5d on account of work done on the
main highways.
GORSE ON ROADS
The clerk was instructed to serve natice upon Mr J. X. Reid, under the Public Works Act, to clear gorse from his frontage on .Southbridge-Leeston
main highway
PETROL. BOWSERS,
"The couni'il has no power to grant permission for anyone to erect a bowser pump or other obstruction on the King's highway," said the engineer, in regard to an application for permission to erect a petrol pump.
The application was from Mr A. BayUs and the reply to be sent is that if he erects the pump it will be on his own responsibility.
MAIN SOUTH ROAD,
The chairman of the Main Highways District Council forwarded for the council's approval proposals for the reconstruction of the Main South road. Ellesmere's share of the cost was set down as £640.
The council decided to hold a special meeting on Tuesday next at 7.30 p.m. to fully consider the master.
DRAIN CLEANING.
Messrs Buckcnham Bros, offered to clean their frontage drain at 2/6 a chain, on half shares.—Accepted.
Mr F. J. McCormick, of Lakeside, asked for the cleaning of Ludemann's drain.—Tenders had been called.
Mr Arch. McLachlan, of Doyleston, applied for assistance in cleaning his road frontage drain, on Leestonßrookside roads.—The council decided to bear half the cost.
Mr L. B. Coe, Irwell, offered to clean his frontage drain at 2/6 a chain, on half shares.
HIRE OF PLANT
The Leeston Town Board's application for the use of the council's pump and light grader was granted. The charge for the pump is to be 10/- each working day and for the grader £1 a year. The council's man must be employed to work the pump, the Town Board to pay his wages.
BETTER LIGHTING'
Mr F. G. S. Chapman asked the council to have electric light installed in the council cottage occupied by him at Brookside.—Granted.
WILL NOT PAY.
Mr J. ,T. Johnston, Bridge end, Rakaia, forwarded an account for alleged supply of grazing for horses for five years. The clerk was instructed U> reply that the counci] had no horses of its own and had given no undertaking to feed other people's horses.
OUT OF ACTION,
A doctor's certificate was received to the effect that the council '3 foreman
of works had an injured foot and would be unable to 'work for some days.
REPORTS.
The waterworks caretaker (Mr -T. Glassey) and foreman of works (Mr H. Johnson) presented reports upon the work carried out during the month. Very little trouble had been experienced in keeping up a supply of water to
the races
The engineer reported that grading work had been done on the main highway and other roads.
BOGGY CREEK,
Instructions were given to the engineer to serve notice upon occupiers along the line of Boggy creek to have cleaning done.
TAUMUTU DRAINS,
It was also decided to call upon certain Taumutu residents to appear before the council to show cause why they should not be called upon to clean the drains through their lands.
FINANCE
The pay sheet totalled . £859 4s Id. When the accounts were met there would be a credit balance of £1422 Is lOd.
IRWELL AND LEESTON CREEKS.
The engineer was instructed to inspect the Irwell creek and present a report to the council, if possible at the special meeting next Tuesday, as to the progress made with the clearing of ob-
structions
Leeston mill creek is also to be inspected and reported upon by the engineer as early as possible.
TENDERS FOR DRAIN
CLEANING
, The following tenders for drain cleaning were accepted:— Contract No. 5, H. Greaves at 1/9 a chain; No. 6, H. Greaves at 1/11; No. 7, A. Grimwood at 2/-; No. 2 (Lambie's drain), C. Johnson at 2/6 a chain; No. 9 (Hanson's drain), C. Johnson at 2/6 a chain; No. 4 (Ludemann's drain), C. Johnson, 3/-; No. 12 (Allen's road), V. Norquay, at 3/- per chain. For several of the drain cleaning contracts no tenders were received.
LIST OF WOUKS,
A water race across the road opposite Mr J . N. Reid's place required covering in, stated Cr. Nixon. The approaches to a culvert at Doyleston required making up.
