dents,

Tonight, at a smoke concert iv the Lakeside Hall, members of the Ellesmere Gun Club will entertain Mr Y. Rowell, a past president and very strong supporter of the Club, who is to leave at the end of this month on a visit to the Homeland.

A start will bo made on the Leeston courts to-morrow morning with the Ellesmere Tennis Sub-Association's Easter tournament, for which large entries have been received. It is expected that the games will extend over three days. On the bowling green adjoining the Ellesmere Bowling Association's champion doubles and singles will be played to-morrow if the weather is favourable.

The special film secured by the Leeston Pictures Committee for screening on Saturday night, entitled ''Wild Horse Mesa," is an action picture from the story of that action-filled romanticist, Zane Grey. Everyone knows that the Western stories and pictures of Zane Grey are the best of this type that are to be seen. Zane Grey is a master of the romance of the West, of its thrills, its daring, and its people. They are clean, wholesome, thrilling pictures, and the best of them all is "Wild Horse Mesa."

A local farmer suggested this morning that, when using second hand sacks for potatoes and other produce, farm, ers should always see that they are turned inside out and properly cleaned. i A small quantity of grain or seeds I nearly always remains in a sack when emptying takes place and unless the sacks are properly cleaned out undesirable seeds may be distributed on a farm when the sacks are being refilled with potatoes or other produce. The farmer considered that merchants should always have sacks turned inside out when grain or seeds are being shot out in the stores. A display which is attracting a good deal of notice is the excellent arrangement of the window of Mr B. O. Priddis, of Messrs Priddis and Co., the well known jewellers in Cathedral Square, and a very fine array of jewellery may be seen here. The attraction does not end there, as Mr Priddis is making n special reduction in prices for the Easter trade. Particular attention is called to engagement Rings, for which this firm is noted, and also Gentlemen's Lever Watches at 10/6, with a twelvemonths ' guarantee. Do not fail to visit this establishment when you are doing your Easter shopping. 6

Arrangements have loeen. made to hold a euchre tournament and dance in the Catholic Hall, Leeston, on Thursday, April 28th.

The Christ-church Presbytery on Tuesday sustained the call of the Southbridge charge to the Rev M. A. Gow, of "Waianawa, Southland.

For the dance to be held at Lakeside on Easter Monday night Macdonald's full orchestra has been engaged and a capital night's enjoyment is promised. The Easter social is one of the bier events of the year at Lakeside. Supper is to be provided by the ladies.

A message received from Christchurch this morning states, "To enable farmers to get stock purchased yesterday at Atklington off the trucks before Good Friday, the Railway Department arranged for the loading of stock to begin immediately the sale ended, and to continue through the night until every animal to be railed was put on the trucks. In the early hours of this morning, between eight and ten special trains would convey the stock to various destinations. Farmers will welcome this innovation which materially cuts down the time that stock is in transit, and which allows them to save a day in getting- it off the trucks on to the farms." The Guardian urged several weeks ago that this speeding up should take place, and in doing so incurred the wrath of the loading contractor at Addington yards. Stock purchased at the market on Wednesday of last week did not reach Southbridge until late on Friday, and the farmers who were kept waiting had some very unkind things to say about the loading system. Apparently the Railway Department has insisted upon a speeding up this week. By carrying on the loading continuously from the time the sale ends it should be possible to always have the trucking done by Thursday afternoon.
