HEAVY PRODUCING PUREBREDS.

NEXT MONDAY'S DISPERSAL

SALE,

In view of the dispersal sale of the Meadowvale herd of Jerseys, to be conducted on Monday next, at 11 a.m. by Messrs H. Matson and Co., on behalf of Mr H. Schnelle, who is retiring from farming, some information concerning the herd and the accompanying pictures will be of general interest.

It is now nearly 20 years since the Meadowvale herd was founded by the purchase of three cows of the best

breeding procurable. One of the three was subsequently disposed of but the remaining two were mated with a

young bull of outstanding breeding, purchased from Mr 11. E. Peryman, of Tai Tapu. This bull had in him a combination of the Beeswax and Mon-

opoly strains,

The best of blood was introduced

from time to time, as the young stock came on, aires being purchased from such notedr breeders as Messrs H. E. B. Watson (formerly of Tai Tapu, now of Riccarton), J. Fleming (Balcairn) and S. R. Lancaster (Palmerston North). The present herd sire was bred by Mr tf. Orr (Stratford).

Mr Sehnelle has always made it a special point of developing a strong constitution in his Jerseys. This has enabled them to weather a severe winter without any special care and bo in the right condition for heavy butterfat producing at the beginning of the milking season. Another very important point to which he has given care has been testing. If under official test a cow did not produce a certain quantity of butterfat it was disposed of. "Boarder cows" have never been kept at Meadowvale.

It has also been Mr Sehnelle 's aim to make each generation better producers than their parents, and in this he has undoubtedly been successful. The young stock at present coming on are a very promising lot and should give results at least as good as those of their matrons, if not better.
