Matters between the Swimming Club and the Town Board have reached that "stfige r when it 'may be as well for the members of both the Club and the Board to pause and think whether it. is worth their while ' to continue a Wrangle the ultimate result of which is not likely to prove of much benefit to either party con-* cerned. The matter m dispute is ' simply the .paymeiit of a paltry ,^2, the promise of which the Board hold was made nearly twelve months ago, on which occasion Dr Withers interviewed the Board and m a lengthy speech made a ; conditional promise that a £i bonus would be paid,: and perhaps more, if the Club were m a satisfactory position at the end of the year; Dr Withers spoke for some considerable time, and a fairly full report appeared m the Guardian , a day or two later. As our report was not questioned either at the , time nor since by Dr Withers, we presume it must be accepted by the ■ Dr as a correct record of what he--5 said at the time. , A copy of the [ report has been handed to Mr Penfold who is at liberty to make what "«'" of it he chooses. It is argued E thuL ihe minutes of the Town Board . and those of the Swimming Club m I reference to the payment of ..the £2 1 do not quite agree, and it is likewise ; manifest that one or the other must be wrong. In the face of this, our report might help as ai guide to what did take place at the meeting, and what was-said at the time, indepenr-. dent of what may appear m the minutes of either the. books of the Club or the Board, Again, the Club have been chargedl/with issuing a false balance sheet'&jr not in'dudirig the credit balance pi tbe previous year when making dp their balance sheet of last year. According to all accounts, the balance over from last year was £1 ts Bd, and the Club claim that they are unable to pay the bonus without breaking into their ' credit balance of the year before. IWe disapprove altogether of the ; practice of making promises for the I payment of money contingent upon circumstances. It only leads to confusion m tlje long run. We believe that the Club should have , everything m black and white, and not rely on what appears on any , minute book, as it is quite an easy matter to misconstrue what appears , there. The substance'of a speech is often lost to view through the boiling , down process. The matter m dispute: is so trivial that it lends colour to the belief that there is a spirit of ♦ antagonism growing up between the . members of the Board aud the Club, which is a regrettable fact, and , *■ we hope the tjme will come when . these petty differences between man ' and man will ceass to exist, ana all ! work together for one common good ]
and , . For the cause that lacks assistance, i For the wrong that needs resstance ( For the future m thi dis*aice, And the good that we can do.
