The Black Family.

Visits of really good musical companies to Southbridge are so few and far between that it is not to be. wondered at that the Town Hall was' well filled on Saturday evening on the occasion of the appearance of the renowned Black Family. We had the pleasure of hearing this talented family five years ago m Southland, where they always are well patronised, and can safely say that there is no family combination of • musicians more popular with the musical public than the subject of this article. The family are at present playing; one member short, which Mr Black explained was due to the illness of his youngest daughter, and who, we are glad to state, is 0.1 the road to recovery. A varied programme was gone 1 through ou Saturday evening, of a kind that could not'fail to be appreciated by even the! most critical. The musical selections by the family orchestra were well piayed, and free from the raspiness one is apt,to notice' m amateur orchestras Miss Nellie Black scored a decided buccess m her tv.o songs, " The last dream," being given faulilesjiy. Mr Bsrt Black's cornet solos were excellent, and free from blemish, with a nice even tone, i-lis American dance was an item that took tha audience by storm. The comic element was supplied by Mr Black, who" looks as vigorous as ever. His Scotch songs could not be, improved upon, and he was well received and vociferously applaud • cd. Miss Nellie's violin solos were a revelation to violin players ; her imitation pieces showing that she was quite a master of the instrument. Miss Elsie played a flute sdo far better than a good many male flautists we have heard, and proved that she was quite capable of giving a few points to much older players. The same young lady contributed a Persian dance m a very graceful style. The mandoline quartette and novelty act were also very gobd items. Each part of the programme concluded with a musical sketch by Mr and Miss black, m which both the performers were quite at home.
