INFLUENCE OF DUN ON ROOTS.

The effect whicU is exercised by farmyard mauure upon the quality o£ root crops growa by its aid ia well shown m the results of au iavosti-

gation condiictel at the Bung>r | College. Two lots of swedes were ( grown with different qmntiti3s oE farmyard inxnure, but wiih similur allowances of artificials, namely, 3cwt superphosphate a :d 2jcwt kuinit ' per acre. The one plot was dressed with 20 fcona of farmyard manure per acre, and the other with 12 lons, whereas the latter produced n yield of MtoM UvwH U^ib, the y^p f^m the

former weighed 28tons Scwt 441 b per [ acre, a difference not by any means adequate to warrant the application of the extra 8 tons c-f dung. The most instructive part of the experiment, however, relates to the influence of the respective dressings upon the composition and keeping qualities i)f the roots. - Analyses showed that the roots grown on the heavily manured laud contained only 89 4 per cent, water and 10 6 percent dry matter, while those grown with 12 toes farmyard manure contained only 88 3 par cent, water and 117 per cent, dry matter, m order to test the keeping qualities of the roots, twelve roots from each lot were left standing until Marcb, when it was found that there were very few unsound roots m the light manured plot, but that aim ost one-fourth of the roots m the heavily manured plot were rotten. Tbe result is decided and significant.
