The Ellesmere Guardian. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1891. Notes by the Way.
The Press has a grievance) Itip pears that on Monday evening ti>e Private Secretary to the Governor handed to <he agent of the Press Association m Christchurch, a memorandum regarding the. intended resignation of His Excellency, It was of course intended for transmission to. all morning' papers m the colony. Curiously enough,' the Press did not receive any cppy'bf. the telegram, which consequently, • did not appear m its issue of Tuesday. It did appear m the Times. Comment is unnecessary. The trick may have been, smart ; it was not journalistic* . ;■ i The unregenerate scoffer makes much of the tact that Colonel Olcott has refused to accept Stuakt Cumberland's wager, and publicly prove the supernatural powers of the Mahatmas. Mbs Annie Bbsant has taken up the cudgels on behalf of the theosophists, and it must be confessed that she has, as she often has had, logic on her side. Supposing a theosophist joffered to Iwager a -thousand pounds with the Arohbishop of Canterbury that His Grace could not procure the jerforraance of a miracle, and the Archbishop refused to accept the wager, surety that would not be a convincing proof to mankind m general that there was nothing m Christianity ? In. certain circles, the man who is not prepared to ' back his opinion ' is deeaed to have little faith m it. But the sys tern is not commonly m. Vogue m. religious and philosophical circies., '.?. 'I. ; The press has not been without, its martyrs. Fine and imprisonment m these days, even the pillory m dajftgaoe by, has been the fate of many a valiant newspaper man, .who has suffered that his paper may prosper. But it has been reserved for Mr Carroll, of Arizona,; to shed lnstre on the calling of journalism by an act of devotion unparalleled m the history of newspapers; Mr Carroll was the editor of an Arizona paper — not the famous Kicker, by the way— and his journal wanted a sensation. The daily tale of murders was growing monotonous and the subscribers clamoured for something more exciting. Their editor found it for them. He wrote his own obituary and then took steps to account for its appearance with a dynamite bomb. He was entirely successful. There was not enough of him left to hold an inquest on, but the funeral was a large. one> ; ..;. , ,'. .. No wise man ever interferes between
