Cardinal Manning made public on August 16. a letter denouncing raffles, church fairs lotteries and all games of chance, ostensibly to benefit the finances of the church. On August 16, Canon Farrar spoke m Westminster Abbey at a special service for delegates to the Congress of Hygiene. Ha delivered a brilliant address, m which he argued that students of hygiene and other scientists were assisting m the work of religion by adding to the wellbeing and enlightenment of the world. Any religion which opposed the advances made by science was a degrading religion. The preacher scouted the idea that science involved any taint of irreligion. So far as the Church of England was concerned, it walked hand m hand with tcbnce. Tb<v ierinon closed with a patition lor a special blessing upon the labours of the Congress.
